OpenAI Tightens ChatGPT Rules With Teen Safety in Mind

OpenAI has changed certain rules for ChatGPT, and the main purpose is to keep teens safe.

These changes aim to better protect younger users who rely on ChatGPT for schoolwork or everyday help. As more teenagers use AI tools, OpenAI wants clearer rules for what ChatGPT can say and do.

The new restrictions are harsher about sensitive themes but cover things like self-harm, mental health difficulties, sexual content, and risky online challenges. If a teenager asks a risky question, ChatGPT will not give the direct answer but will give safer advice or will advise him to go to an adult to ask for help.

OpenAI also modified how ChatGPT behaves when someone seems unhappy or emotional. The idea is to stop comments that could sound like they endorse risky activity. Instead, ChatGPT should answer in a calm and caring way and focus on safety.

Another update changes how ChatGPT talks about adult issues. The rules now explicitly declare that some content is not suitable for younger people. When these issues come up, ChatGPT will either divert the topic or will give the safer advice.

OpenAI says these adjustments are based on research, expert input, and how users use ChatGPT in real life. Since many teens use AI for schoolwork, advice, and curiosity, the company wants to reduce the potential of harm while still being useful.

This update does not mean teens are excluded from using ChatGPT. It only means there are more limitations on how the AI responds. The purpose is to allow youngsters to learn and explore without seeing things that could be dangerous.

OpenAI also claims these safety criteria will continue to develop over time. As AI grows and more teens use it, the rules will be revised again.
